SOLID46, 1 layer elements: problem with failure criteria

SOLID46, 1 layer elements: problem with failure criteria

(OP)
Hi,

I'm having a problem with using SOLID46 elements in a composite analysis:

I'm modelling a rectangular plate under tensile loading, with a variable number of layers through thickness. The displacement is set incrementally, in order to see the propagation of the rupture. When I do the analysis with, say, 4 elements through thickness, each having 2 layers, the results are correct and the rupture propagation is logical (with the Tsai-Wu failure criteria), but when I stack 8 elements of 1 layer each, the Tsai-Wu failure criterion drop to a very small value (about 10^-3) for all elements, avoiding them to break. Then, the stress increases with the displacement at each step, but the criterion are still very low. There is something I don't understand... The problem is met only when using 1 layer elements.

If someone could help, that would be kind!
