(OP)
I need to show a colleage examples of the damage a flailing driveshaft (busted u-joint) can do.
Google and I did not get too far with an image search.

Anyone know any good links ?

Thanks,

RE: driveshaft gone wild carnage pix on line

No pics or links, but quite a few years ago I did happen to watch the consequences unfold as a drag car lost its front U-joint during an upshift while traveling at a pretty good speed.  Without a safety loop, the shaft caught the pavement, which then caused the rear U-joint to break.  The now completely free driveshaft proceeded to punch through the floorpan and bash the trunklid open, piercing it as well.  Momentarily, there was daylight under the rear wheels.

I have seen the carnage left by a jack shaft in a truck that let go one end, at 50 mph,  destroyed everything within reach!

Ripped wires and airlines apart, bend the lower chassis flanges, destroyed the shock absorbers, and itself.

Well I do not have any pictures, but I will provide a web link. I think that is what happened to this young race car driver-

On that day, the #51 Clements team traveled to 311 Speedway in North Carolina for a dirt race like countless others they compete in each year. While on the track, a bizarre incident took place that would rewrite Jeremy's destiny. A part malfunction caused the steel driveshaft to break loose and pierce through the cockpit of Jeremy's car tearing through his right hand. Jeremy was rushed to nearby Wake-Forest Baptist hospital for emergency surgery. The outlook was grave as he had lost a significant amount of blood and there was extensive damage to the blood supply, tendons, bones and tissue in his hand as well as fractures to his arm and wrist. Over the next few weeks, Jeremy went through multiple operations, a bout of pneumonia and excrutiating pain but with the support of his family, he pulled through and amazed the medical staff with his unexplained progress.

In addition to the direct damage, there are unfortunate cases where a long driveshaft came loose its front end,  and caused the vehicle to "pole-vault".

Photos of such things are hard to come by for obvious legal reasons,  lawyers being prone to ask such things as "How dare you let this happen?!"

As an exercise,  you might calculate the energy in a driveshaft spinning at say 6,000 rpm...
