How To Stress Relieve Structural Steel?

How To Stress Relieve Structural Steel?

How To Stress Relieve Structural Steel?

(OP)
Hi
I am designing a steel structure that will be a welded construction using hot rolled square hollow section steel to BS EN 10025 S275JOH.
I need to know the following:
1) What is a suitable stress relieving process?
2) Will the stess relieving have any effect on the strength of the stucture?

Thanks
Rich

RE: How To Stress Relieve Structural Steel?

In the US, steel structures should be designed to a relevant Code or Standard, like AWS D1.1 Structural Steel. If you have access to AWS D1.1, information related to preheat, welding procedures, post weld heat treatment and inspection will be provided.

To answer your second question – given a proper PWHT, the strength of the structure will not be compromised.

But, it must be accounted for in the welding procedure qualification (and possibly in the purchase of the steel itself)!

Have you considered vibratory stress relief?
We used it a couple of times on fabrications with a lot of welding.  Seemed to work!

RE: How To Stress Relieve Structural Steel?

Unless you are dealing with very thick wall sections (>3/4"), you typically don't have to worry about it.  For conservative approach, consider in the pre-heat and post-heat for welding as others have noted.
