(OP)
Since my laptop is apparently unfortify-able, I am open to suggestions for desktop computers to run SW.  I am price sensitive, and this is for my own use, so I don't need a super high-end machine, which the threads all seem to talk about.

RE: affordable desktop solution

I just bought one of the Dell systems suggested on the video card testing page at solidworks.com. I'm happy with it running 2006 right now. One tip... if the system you want is on the "business side" of Dell... you can use your SS# as a tax id. Other than that... I'm not comfortable helping you shop... cause I'm a real hardware dunder-head.

Have a read through FAQ559-986 and FAQ559-974

Can you share what type of parts and assemblies you will be working on from home?  Many times the end products you need to work with will dictate the type of hardware you will need to work productively.

RE: affordable desktop solution

Check out cadalyst.com for reviews.  Systems from Xi Computer are continually winning the cost/benefit race.  I have one that is almost two years old and very solid (AMD Opteron, 64-bit) that cost only $2,000.

I'm considering getting another one in January.
