ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

(OP)
QW 401.3 allows for additional impact tests to supplement and existing PQR while maitaining the essential variables.
Question:  The original PQT was qualified on 1/4" material and the additional impacts were conducted on 3/8" material.
Is the range for non impacted material 1/16" to 3/4" or 1/16" to 1/2".

QW 200.4 (a) (b) Can you develop a new WPS based on the following:A PQR was developed using GTAW and SMAW on 3/8" material with GTAW at 1/8" and SMAW at 1/4".
and another PQR was qualified using GMAW pulse on 3/8" material.
The new WPS would consist of GTAW root and GMAW fill with the following ranges Root 1/4" MAx"  Fill 3/4" max.

Do the PQR cupons needd to be 1/2" thick in order to develop this new WPS. QW200.4 (b)

RE: ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

Based on the 2004 Edition of the ASME B&PV Code,

1. 1/16" - 3/4" if the essential variables were not changed and the supplementary essential variables are followed, per QW-401.3

2. Yes, multiple PRQ's can support a WPS, see QW-200.4 (a) However, since the coupon thickness is 3/8", the root is qualified to 1/4" using the GTAW process and fill with GMAW is qualified to 1/2" deposit thickness.

3. QW-200.4 (b) paragraph only applies to qualification of various processes for root deposits only.

RE: ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

metengr,

In the case of AWS D1.1, folks who develop WPSs also use multiple PQRs to develop a WPS...example: root pass SMAW..intermediate passes FCAW etc. I accept that to be the case but I have searched Sec 4 of D1.1 for the provisions that permits this but to no avail. I'd appreciate it if you could provide the Sect when you find time.

RE: ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

I see the answer to the first question being, 1/16 - 1/2".  Please let me know if I'm missing something.

Have you reviewed par 3.6.1 in D1.1?

weldtek, thank you so much.

RE: ASME IX QW200.4 (a) and (b) and QW401.3

weldtek;
You caught my typo – good catch, 3/4" should be 1/2". Per QW-401.3, a WPS can be revised to include impact testing using the same essential welding requirements provided an additional coupon is welded to the same essential welding requirements as the non-impact qualified WPS, and adding the Supplementary Essential Welding requirements, per ASME Section IX. Since the original WPS was qualified using a 1/4" coupon thickness, the added coupon for impact testing would be required to be at least 1/4" in thickness.
