Hello everybody,

I would like if some of you could clarify me if according to ASME VIII, Div.1, it is requested to install a relief valve in pre-filters, after-filters in adsortion dryers ( for compressed air, 10.5 kg/cm2).

Is it dependable of the volume of the filters?

Carlos-

If it has a U stamp, it needs a pressure relief device regardless of volume. The only exception would be to use Code Case 2211.

Hello jte, thanks you very much for your fast answer and the valuable links you indicated. Iwould like if you could provide me some "light"/advice on my special case.

Considering what I have read in links, it seems that I would have to install a relief valve in each filter because there are 2 isolating valves per filter.

However, the adsortion dryer has not U-stamp, becuase it would be installed in Europe (ASME is not legally requested by Authorities); the project indicated that the adsortion dryer and filters has to accoplish ASME VIII, div.1, but the dryer has conformity with Pressure Equipment Directive (Europe), which incorporates 2 relief valves (one per each adsortion tower) for the full system.

I am not sure if you have experience in similar cases; Any advice will be appreciatte.

Carlos-

For VIII-1 it is ok to have isolation (block) valves between vessels and their relief valves. It is even ok to have a relief path from one vessel through block valves to another vessel through block valves to a pressure relieving device which relieves both vessels. As long as the flow calc's support the design and the block valves have some form of control to prevent them from being inadverdently closed.

If you don't put the U stamp on the vessel, then you don't have to meet the relief device requirements of VIII-1 but good engineering judgement must still be applied.

I have no experience with the PED or its requirements, so I can't help you there.

Sec VIII-1 vessels requirere re,lief valves that is a Code requirement. It one will not be installed, requires a good reason and explanation on the data report, the AI has to be satisfied of the explanation; if it is a good one
the he/she will sign the report.
