And speaking of spelling

And speaking of spelling

(OP)
The other day I was driving behind a truck that was very nicely identified as "Municipal Waist".

RE: And speaking of spelling

Not a spelling thing but recently saw a sign:
  Warning
   Slow
pedestrians

RE: And speaking of spelling

There would be a lot fewer problems if those pedestrians would just speed up!

RE: And speaking of spelling

My wife of 36 years has accepted the fact that most engineers do not do really well in spelling.  Thank goodness for spell checkers.

I think I already mentioned the foreign guy who gave me a business card that said his title was "Genetal Manager."

RE: And speaking of spelling

I wonder if he had to take any testes to land that job.

I think he was just nuts.

RE: And speaking of spelling

I get a kick out the "Slow Children Playing" signs.  Shouldn't they be on a short yellow bus instead of walking home?

RE: And speaking of spelling

or "slow children at play" as they have around here...  They tend to put "slow" above the picture, and "children at play" below the picture... I've sometimes thought it would be fun to order a sign with the word placement altered, and sneak out at night to switch signs with one down the street...

RE: And speaking of spelling

Just recently  saw a graffitied stop sign that made me giggle:

   Don't
   STOP
Hammertime!

RE: And speaking of spelling

one female engineer, which i knew from college because she was a lab assistant, when we met in business she gave me her business card... she was a: heavy erections specialist.
i asked her: you are not kidding about this... are you?
she said: i specialized in heavy erections because it gives me great pleasure to all that heavy equipment finally erect thanks to my efforts.
honest to G'd.

I once worked one culbicle in front of David Outhouse and had an aquaintance who reported to a sergeant in the Army whose name was Harry Whorehouse.

RE: And speaking of spelling

An office building in our area was recently put up for sale - the real estate agent put a large sign up on the facade which read, 'BUILIDING FOR SALE"

RE: And speaking of spelling

In Colorado I have seen a road sign: " Watch for children"
After a few miles a second sign: " Watch for horses"

Why do the horses care about the time ?

A company that I used to do buisness with had a marketing guy named Richard Head.

RE: And speaking of spelling

Horses care about time because:

"The time is neigh"

Wheels within wheels / In a spiral array
A pattern so grand / And complex
Time after time / We lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see / Their effects.

RE: And speaking of spelling

and what American parents with the Family name of "TRICKLE" would name their son Richard....

Of course they did and Dick Trickle went on to race in NASCAR

RE: And speaking of spelling

Because when they see the signs, they say to themselves, "Oh that deer is happily leaping toward the highway and getting away with it."

RE: And speaking of spelling

Our high school had a tradition - "Senior Cut Day." When the appointed day arrived for my class to head to the river, sombody decided to paint a notice on the large concrete retaining entering town.

"Sienor Cut Day" the sign proudly proclaimed. That one made the paper.

What do you want from somebody who actually failed the entrance test to get into the Marine Corps (and denied me another referral toward contract promotion)?

As a kid, my brother had an oral surgeon by the name of "Dr. Payne"

RE: And speaking of spelling

Maybe he rostered for laundry detail and Steynes was a typo........... After all Lewtam must be very busy

RE: And speaking of spelling

Since we've hit the "funny names" prtion of the thread, Austin has an excellent urologist by the name of Richard Chopp.

There's a thread on him here:
http://blogs.herald.com/dave_barrys_blog/2005/06/urinary_problem.html

The best post in that thread is 4:39 PM June 7, 2005:

Quote:

Dr. Chopp -- who, I'm told, unsmilingly refuses to answer to "Dick" -- performed my vasectomy a few years ago. I have acquired two additional children since then, but that was by adoption, so I suppose the procedure went fine. Truth is, he's highly competent and if you find out a guy from Austin has had a vasectomy, odds are Dr. Chopp performed it.

But I have to tell you, the guy has a pretty damned inappropriate sense of humor. I'm lying there on my back, and there is literally smoke rising from my privates, and he chooses this time to tell (unskillfully) the following joke:

---
"So this guy goes into his doctor and says, 'Hey, doc, I need you to do a castration on me.'

"The doc doesn't want to do it, but the guy insists, so finally the doc agrees. He does the operation, and the patient gets out of recovery and starts out the door, and as he's going out he meets a buddy of his. He asks the buddy, 'So what are you here for?'"

"The second guy says, 'Oh, I came to get a vasectomy.'

"And the first guy slaps himself in the head and says, 'Vasectomy! THAT's the word I wanted!'"
---

Of course I laughed. The guy had a knife at my balls, damn straight I laughed. "Ooo, doc, that's a good one."

RE: And speaking of spelling

A man I knew years ago was buying a house. He was wading through the paperwork with the real estate agent.
The agent said
"Now I need your John Henry".
The man started to write John Henry....
"No" Said the agent,"I meant your full name."
"That is my name, John Henry Frost."
A little farther down the page the agent said,
"Now we need your Jack Frost.
NO NO I meant your signature."
"Yes, I've always signed my name 'Jack Frost'".
I don't know if the story was true or just a family joke but I heard it from Mrs. Jack Frost, and they had recently bought a home.

RE: And speaking of spelling

I have heard that in some countries the ability to spell correctly is seen as secondary, where the primary concern is conveying engineering principles or information.

In the UK to become chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers you are not only assessed on the technial content of you submissions, but also on your written English, spelling, grammar and syntax.  The Institution believes that to be a Professional Engineer you must be competent in the use of English.

How is this viewed in other countries?  I once had an Australian colleague who maintained that spelling was irrelevant in an engineering context?

RE: And speaking of spelling

See your spelling ussuri, 'Technial content' or 'Technical Content'?

RE: And speaking of spelling

Touche!

RE: And speaking of spelling

So, when your Australian colleague writes "The scetion needs to have a moment of inretia of 3.91  mm^4"

did he mean 3.91, or 3.19?

Sorry, fail.

Cheers

The company I work for (Siemens) here in the UK generally request you answer your telephone with "Siemens" and then the site you're based at; e.g "Siemens Manchester", "Siemens Congleton" etc...
A few years ago Siemens bought the Building Controls company Landis & Staefa. The headquarters in the UK is in Staines, near London. The ladies on the switchboard flatly refused to comply with company regulations on answering the phones...

RE: And speaking of spelling

I once worked in a public teaching hospital where there was a doctor who pronounced his name "Deeth", but it was spelled Death.

On his office door was a sign "Dr Death",  he was (and probably still is) a pathologist in Melbourne.

RE: And speaking of spelling

Death as a name is not that uncommon in England. It dates back to the Norman invasion, so is usually spelled with the apostrophe "De'ath"and pronounced as DEE-ATH

Good Luck

Our children are seeing a Dr. Doctor. I initially thought it as a joke, but, it really is his surname.

I wonder what his siblings go for a living - will have to ask next visit.

RE: And speaking of spelling

We had a "De'ath" in my class at university.  Those of us with a sense of humour wanted to sponsor him for a PhD.
