Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Given:
Vessel is Inside a building
Seismic Zone = 2A

Material SS= 316L

HHL = 16'-2"

THICKNESS = 1/2" (0.50")
Height =     24’-11
Two head:    F&D
Diameter =    18’-00”
Skirt height = 4’-2”

Bottom Shell = 10’-0” and Bottom F & D head has half pipe cooling jacket.

REFERENCE TO ASCE 4-engl 1998 page 14, 3.1.6.3 building model hydrodynamic mass effects (d) the effects of water mass in the vertical direction shal be insluced in the building modle. For wather depths less than 50 ft, the entire water mass may be lumped at the bottom of the basin.

What spreed sheet calculation or software pregram is available?

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

I don't normally design tanks in buildings, so can't comment on the details of that.

Typically, the standard AWWA D100 seismic design for flat-bottom tanks does include sloshing effects, though perhaps not in the way you'd expect.  With a large tank, the sloshing period is very slow, and the net effect is a reduction in seismic loading, as compared to just assuming the water is all a rigid chunk.  As you get to smaller diameters, you begin to reach a point where the sloshing effect actually adds to the load, rather than reducing it.  The sloshing effect is modeled simply as a spring-mass system, just the period (and thus loading) are different.

On a small tank like yours, where the overall geometry is not a conventional design, it would make sense to treat all the water as a lumped mass, provided any applicable codes let you work it that way.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

While working on another project, I happened to notice that the IBC-2000 does require sloshing to be considered if the natural frequency of the sloshing is close to the natural frequency of the building.

And, in scanning back through the original post, I see you specify a FULL vessel, and I assume there would be no sloshing in a full vessel; ie, full of liquid.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Does anyone have any comments on the usefullness of these references listed by Isthill?

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

I think that the deafening silence is comment enough.

Keep listening TGS4.  Several of the papers listed are the primary sources for the seismic rules we follow today.  Many of the more recent papers, while interesting, have added academic volume but have not really influenced the way we treat seismic loads on tanks. TID-7024 and the "Basis of Seismic Design Provisions..." are probably the more useful ones in the list.  Hope this helps.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

SteveBraune and Isthill,

Thank you both for the information.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Great post Isthill! Double star for you.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Question:  Are the references listed actually availble for download somewhere?  Or is this just hits off google?

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

On some of these, a Google search of the title just pulls up references to it, on some it pulls up a .pdf file.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

I agree with JStephen - links to the documents (wjether for purchase or free) is far momre useful than a list of pdfs.  In the future, please either provide complete citations (author, title, publication, year, publisher, page number) or links to the websites where one can purchase/read the documents.

SteveBraune, I am still listening.  However good the documents might be, with the pdf filename only, they have little value to me.

JStephen (Mechanical)& TGS4 (Mechanical)

The list is the actual published document in the .pdf format and available on the WEB using Google search. (ASME and others).

What did surprise me is AWWA D103-97 Factory -Coated bolted Steel Tanks.pdf, AWWA D100-96.pdf,  API 650 addendum3.pdf, and API 620 2004 July A. is available free!

TGS4 (Mechanical)

Sir, you have the document name, now it is up to you.

PS: I need this technical refernce for my current assignment

I do hope this dose help the GOBLE TEAM MEMBERS

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Normally, when you buy the API documents, the addenda are free anyway.

The AWWA documents are pirated- they are copyrighted and posted in violation of the copyright.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

TGS4---You can "cut and paste" to Google from here.

RE: Dose Sloshing have any Effects In Full Vertical Cylindrical Vessels

Isthill, deanc and others,

You are correct.  Mea culpa.
