Nozzle located on circumfrential weld joint of shell

Nozzle located on circumfrential weld joint of shell

Nozzle located on circumfrential weld joint of shell

(OP)
The vessel is in my case is spot radiographed, what is ASME code NDE requirement for nozzles located on circumferential weld joints.

Per UW-14 nozzle meeting the requirements of UG 36(C)(3), may be located on weld joints , provided the weld meets the requirements of UW 51 for the length equal to three times the diameter of opening on either side from centre line of nozzle.

Would above requirement, regarding full radiography of weld joints applicable to my case.

Thanks in advance

RE: Nozzle located on circumfrential weld joint of shell

No. The rules in UW-14(b) apply to a single opening in one of three types of weld joints - head to shell, Category B and Category C.

If you meet these requirements, the weld of the vessel shall be subjected to RT based on a length = 3 times the diameter of the nozzle opening with the opening being the midlength point of RT. UW-51 provides rules for conducting RT in accordance with Article 2, Section V.

Could you please clarify further your commnets " No " . Meanwhile based on your comments , I presume as follows :
In my case with vessel weld jonints are spot radiographed, the circumferential weld joint, type B , where single 20 inch opening ( for 20 inch nozzle with reinforcing pad )is located shall be fully radiographed per UW 14 . Full radigraphy shall be per UW 51.

Thanks for your time.

Actually, the No was intended for something else that was on my mind regarding the original interpretation of your question, so disregard.

Per your stated information, the entire circumferential weld that will have the 20" nozzle opening thru it does not require full radiography. Per UW-14 (b) only the length of this weld based on the diameter of the nozzle opening, as mentioned above, shall be radiographed in compliance with UW-51.

Yes, I missed to specify, extent of radiography of circumfrential weld joint will be, only 3 times the diameter of opening , on either side of the centre line of opening.

Thanks!
