I need 3D CAD files for GM 8.1l engine

I need 3D CAD files for GM 8.1l engine

(OP)
We're using this engine in an application and all I have a 2D Acad files that our Vendor gave us.
I've searched thru Google, but can't find anything.
Does anyone here know where to find these? Do I need to contact GM?

RE: I need 3D CAD files for GM 8.1l engine

GM is probably the best place to start, but I doubt they would give you a fully detailed model ... at best an outside surfaces model.

Do you need ALL the detail?
If you just need the mounting details & overall approx size/shape for clearance, it will probably be quicker to make a rough model from the 2D dimensions. You could probably have a model done in the time spent looking & waiting for an answer.

But good luck with your search.

Unfortunately, the 2D print I have doesn't have any dimensions, hidden lines, or anything. It's also polylines, which makes it hard to find centerpoints, etc. I just need the engine mount holes, and the overall shape and size to get coolant lines, and other things routed around it. We've started the process of getting files from GM. Sounds like a lot of red tape. (My boss is handling that.)
I'll keep you posted on what it takes.

RE: I need 3D CAD files for GM 8.1l engine

In application like this I ask for a Customer Interface Drawing (CID) and make my own interface model. Depending on the CAD system you use, this can be the start point for a "top down design" of the components you need to develop to the interface. I do this for hundreds of components.

Matthew Ian Loew

One suggestion:

Once you define your interface model, make sure you send hard-copy drawings with critical dimensions back to your customer for their approval. If there's a mistake, you want it to be their responsibility, not yours.

This stuff is always dicey, even if you get something from GM, you should still demand customer buy-off, or you may be left holding a very stinky bag.

Well, These are our own proprietary products. We will get an engine in and mock it up to make sure it all works before ever selling one. Heck, It'd almost be easier to physically measure the engine and model the stuff around that.

David,

That may be true, but you will not be able to document the tolerances of the component (the engine) that you are interfacing with. This may be valuable information. I am currently working on a project where we must create about 50 interface models over an entire vehicle just to be able to perform the systems integration.
