Has anybody heard of nichrome crimp lugs. I have been told they are best for connecting to element's but all of my google and supplier searches have come up blank.

Remember that you usually need to allow some cooling to nichrome/copper crimp connects both for the crimp and the copper.  You can't leave the crimp inside insulation or it will burn out eventually.
