I am presently on a job that has three bridges all three are structural beam frame. The contractor needs to get welders certified for the metal deck. What is the difference between the two specification on welding deck?
Can the welders be certified D1.3 and be ok?
Also one of the bridges requires "fillet welds" for the decking. Is this D1.3?

D1.1 is the spec for structural steel greater than 3/16 in.
Welder Qualification requirements are in Section 4 of D1.1.
Section 2 of D1.1 covers the design of welded connections.
Welders must show proficiency in the WPS,(Welding Procedure Specification), including weld type, position, direction and welding process that they will be performing.
Although fillet welds are deemed prequalified by AISC ASD, provided they conform to AWS Code and the AISC ASD (Allowable Stress Design) Steel Construction Manual, prequalified joints are limited to the SMAW, SAW, FCAW and GMAW (Except short circuiting transfer) processes.

1. There is some overlap between D1.1 and D1.3 regarding thicknesses qualified for use. D1.1 can be used for carbon or low-alloy steel 1/8 in and greater
2. The orginal question dealt with D1.5 and D1.3. There may be differences in approach between D1.5 and D1.1 regarding welding sheet to structural steel.
3. According to the provisions of D1.3, some joints involving sheet steel are considered prequalified while others are not and thus require qualification testing...see Secs 3 and 4 respectively of D1.3
4. When fillet welds are used to attach sheet to structural steel supporting member, D1.3 requires qualification testing. Table 4.1 Figure 4.2A (lap and T-joints)
5. GMAW-S can be used without qualification testing when welding prequalified sheet steel to sheet steel joints permitted by the provisions of D1.3 Sec 3. See also D1.3 ec 1.3.1..which considers GMAW-S an approved welding process.
6. IMHO, welders who weld structural steel joints and sheet steel to structural steel, or sheet steel to sheet steel, must be qualified to both D1.5 and D1.3 codes.
