I suggest looking in the FAQ Section under SolidWorks Installation. A lot of great information in getting up and running without the normal problems. I would go with new installation and don't for get to turn off your virus scan.

about the virus scan...mine runs off a server, so turning it off means turning EVERYONE off for the install. Kinda sucks. I've heard about the bugs associated with doing a install with it on.
