Saving section views?

Saving section views?

Saving section views?

(OP)
Just wondering if custom section views can be saved so that they appear in Orientation toolbar and can be viewed anytime without having to create them fresh everytime?

Thanks

RE: Saving section views?

Just save the named view after each section (2nd button on box). You can also use the named section views in drawings.

I am trying to create section views of parts/assemblies, not drawings. I tried saving the section view. It does appear in the orientation toolbar but when I double click on the name, I don't get the section view...

RE: Saving section views?

Make an Assy Cut and save it as a config.

RE: Saving section views?

DID YOU EVEN TRY MY SUGGESTIONS?  O.k., let's try this again.  You can save the name of the section view in the Orientation dialog box AFTER creating your views by picking the "New View" button (2nd button on the Orientation dialog box), entering the name, then hit O.K.  the new name should now be in the Orientation dialog box.

OR, after picking the section view and creating the section, do not close the "section view" dialog box.  Look down to "Options", and pick "Save View".  This ALSO saves the named view to the Orientation dialog box.

(yes, in part or assembly file)

What is an Assy Cut?

RE: Saving section views?

There are a few features you can make on an assembly... a cut is one of them. Start a sketch & make a cut thru the assembly that creates the section you want. Save that as a configuration. If you need to orient a custom drawing view to display your new section - create that in the assembly. Now open your drawing & select that view orientation & configuration in the drawing viewport you want it. Bada-bing bada-boom. Now you get to manually create all the pretty hatching that you didn't get automatically - because you didn't create your section view in your drawing.

Is your section so complex that you can't do it in the drawing?

RE: Saving section views?

An Assy Cut is when you make a sketch ( I use a rectangle) with one side of it positioned where you want the cutting plane, with the rest of the rectangle completely enclosing the part of the model that you want to cut away. Then create an assembly Cut-Extrude feature that completely takes out the part of the model you don't want to see.

This is in another configuration, with the cut-extrude suppressed in all the other configurations. Also, name the view that you want of the cut and save it. Now, when you return to this configuration, you can get the same view, and if you ever want it in a drawing you can insert the named view.

RE: Saving section views?

Look under Features, Assemblies in the SW Help files.

One "problem" with using a saved section view in the Orientation pop-up, is that once selected, the section remains for all other standard views. It is, however, very easy to deselect the Section View icon to remove it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Assy Cut feature works. Hoiwever, saving the section view in the Orientation box doesn't work. After I save the view, it does show up in the Orientation Box but double clicking it doesn't yield the section view. I am not sure what's the problem..

RE: Saving section views?

Right-click in your drawing view, select PROPERTIES, make sure your viewing the correct configuration.

Are you SURE you can't just cut a section view in your drawing?

RE: Saving section views?

Can you create & save other views in the Orientation box which do  work? (not using the section tool)

Either way, try running a repair. See the Solidworks Installation section in the FAQs.
