Creating a Tapered Thread
Creating a Tapered Thread
(OP)
Can anyone tell me how to create a tapered thread? When I create a tapered helical path and then sweep a cross section thru that path, the entire cross section revolves along the helix. I am trying to get the thread to enlarge along its axis while revolving on a helical path.
Anyone know how to do this?

Are you wanting the root dia to remain constant, but the crest to enlarge? If so, do the Swept Cut (from a tapered solid) along a non-tapered helix. The crest of the thread profile (cutting tool) should be larger than the OD of the solid.

RE: Creating a Tapered Thread
The thread I am trying to create has a straight section which I create as follows:
Step 1 Create the cross sectional sketch. Create a helix. Sweep the cross section along the path of the helix.
Step 2 At some point along the thread, I now want to create a tapered section. I now have tried to use the same cross sectional sketch, and move it along the path of a tapered helix. The problem is that unlike the results in step 1 where the sketch is simply revolving along a helical path (but the axis of the thread remains straight), when you use a tapered helix, the entire thread corkscrews along the path of the helix. All I want is that as the thread is winding along its axis, its size is increasing like a taper.
Any suggestions?

2) Check your "orientation" options for sweeping the cut profile.
3) You may have to use Guide Curves to prevent the "corkscrew".

For the Example you posted above:
This is the incorrect way of making what you want.

Is there another way of doing it that uses less memory?
