Question on soil mechanics

Question on soil mechanics

RE: Question on soil mechanics

The head difference across both sand layers is 125 cm.  Using a form of Darcy's equation solve for the head loss across Sand 1.  Q = k(h/l)A

The differnce in head is the head acrooss sand 2, so you can solve for it's k value.

This should get you started.

Thanks CarlB,

I got 115cm head difference for Sand 2 and an k of 0,0000026

does that make sense?

Tobias

RE: Question on soil mechanics

Yes, I get the same, for k having units of m/sec

Thanks CarlB, I am so glad I found this webpage and more happy you replied to my post so quickly. I am preparing for APEGBC exams in December to register in Canada...I graduated 10 years back in Germany and find it hard to motivate myself for all that theoretical stuff after having worked as Project Manager all those years.

I may need to get back to you with some more questions if you don't mind.

I am based in Vancouver, what about yourself?

Thanks, Tobias

RE: Question on soil mechanics

Hi Tobias,

You're welcome.  That problem got me to dust off some rarely-used concepts...graduation was more than 20 years ago for me.

Sure, ask more questions; I may not be able to get on it as quickly but others here may jump in.

I'm located in Anchorage, Alaska - long ways from Vancouver even though Alaska borders on Canada, eh!

RE: Question on soil mechanics

Some bug in the forum software automatically gave my last response a "star" upon posting, I guess once you're a star on a topic always a star!

Once a star, always a star...
