Why did the tool holder broke?

Why did the tool holder broke?

Why did the tool holder broke?

(OP)
Hello,

We had a Punch Duplictor that punches holes on Plates and Channels that are between 1/8'' to 3/4'' thick.

In the last 30 days, the Tool holder that holds the Punch Die broke down twice. The first die holder, break into 2 clean pieces. While the second die holder, break into several pieces.

The first Tool holder broke down because the operator was not following the SOP and measures were put in place to prevent recurrence.

We are unable to determine the reason for the second failure. Some were saying that the Tool holder were heat treated wrongly thus it was too britle.

Any thoughts why it happens or suggestion on how to prevent this from recurring?

Thanks

RE: Why did the tool holder broke?

Have you checked the hardness of the second holder to determine if it was indeed too hard for the application?

Can you confirm or only speculate that SOP's were being performed at the second breakage?

Just some thoughts.....

RE: Why did the tool holder broke?

Was there a change in tool steel used in the holder or is this a machine tool maker supplied tool holder. A change in tool steel or heat treatment process could cause the problem you have experienced.
