Backfill requirements around foundation wall

Backfill requirements around foundation wall

Backfill requirements around foundation wall

(OP)
Hello,

I have just completed some modifications to the exterior of my home and now have to backfill.  The area that requires backfill is about 10x14x4', the existing fill around the house appears to be clay.  What is the appropriate backfill?  Is it better to use sand or gravel?

thanks,
Ed

RE: Backfill requirements around foundation wall

Ed-
You can use either open graded gravel or pea gravel for bacfill. These materials require no compaction due to the lack of fine materials. Sand backfill will require adding water, allowing it to soak then compacting it 9 inch horizontal lifts. If the height of the backfill is 4 foot then drain pipes are not necessary.
