Minimum size of ASME code vessel

Minimum size of ASME code vessel

Minimum size of ASME code vessel

(OP)
Dear Folks;

Is there a minimum size or volume below which vessels do not have to be ASME code certified.

This question arises from dust collector air headers. Which, I have been told do not need pressure vessel certification below a certain volume.

RE: Minimum size of ASME code vessel

Yes, this is described in the Introduction of ASME Section VIII, Div 1 for unfired pressure vessels.

...i) vessels having an inside diameter, width, height or cross section diagonal not exceeding 6" with no limitation on length

RE: Minimum size of ASME code vessel

It is possible that the headers could fall under pressure piping code requirements.

RE: Minimum size of ASME code vessel

Sometimes we classify piping assemblies as "fabricated piping assemblies" and design them in accordance with the piping code instead of the ASME BPV Code.

For example, pipeline pig launchers/receivers and compressor pulsation bottles can be fabricated piping assemblies.

RE: Minimum size of ASME code vessel

Adrian2,
The ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code also includes provision for pressure less than 15 psig and temperature less than 366 deg F for non-toxic non-flammable fluid services being excluded from the scope of the B31.3 Code.  I think the ASME vessel Codes have similar 15 psig threshold for application.  Your dust collection air headers may be outside of ASME scope.

ApC2Kp,

The air pressure in this header is 80 psig

Also 1969grad,

the fabricated piping assemblies idea sounds good

thanks also metengr I will check out the PV code section you mentioned.

Best Regards

Adrian
