External NPT threads: doable?

External NPT threads: doable?

External NPT threads: doable?

(OP)
I was perusing some old threads about creating an external thread with cosmetic threads. I'm not finding an option though to create an external NPT thread.  Is it possible to do it "legitimately", or do I have to wing it?

(my part is a little chunk of pipe 3" long, with 1-1/4" NPT thread on the outside)

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

I either wing it or search on-line to download it.

Ok...just checking. Sounds good...

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

Many times I have wished for a "Thread Wizard" that could create external threads like the Hole Wizard does for threaded holes, so I could get decent depiction of external pipe threads.

Haven't heard of one yet.

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

Hi Mike,

There is currently no way to create external threads using the hole wizard. You might want to question your thoughts if really important to show. As a possible way model a pipe and then add a cut extrude or revolve cute if you wish to show taper to simulate the external NPT threads. Next rename feature in design tree to 1.25" EXT NPT so you remember. You can then add a NPT callout on drawing.
You can also probably create add cosmetic thread if you want.

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

I thought about trying to do a thread as a library feature but I cannot get the Helix feature to add to the library feature. The help says it support helixes.

Is this a bug?

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

I can get a helix into the Design library\feature, but only after I make it into a feature and not as a sketch helix.

I went to your thread...for some reason it's not owrking for me.

My OD is about 1-5/8.  It won't let me specify a diameter any larger than .4125" ("Please enter noumber between.00000 ans .4125")

This is an external NPT thread. Should I be selecting the circular edge of my part? ie: the small end of the cone?

I'm trying all different ways. I tried jsut a simple straight externals thread on a dummy part and it worked. just fine.  I can't seem to get my NPT thread though....

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

Scott, will it allow you to add the cut sweep to the library? When I right click on it, there is no option to add it to the library.

Mike,
It's not perfect. Sometimes it will not get the thds I want either. Sometimes you have to fake it.

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

I highlighted the feature and then I drug the file into the Design Library and saved it as a library feature. It then saved it into the folder and I was able to use in another part.

...just like my wife?

RE: External NPT threads: doable?

I download 3D pipe models with threaded ends from Mcmcaster-Carr and use a design table to create different lengths - the threads look real and there's even planes at the thread engagement depth.
