I am having a difficult time finding a durable encoder for use in the oil and gas industry.  We have been through a few brands of encoders, but they all end up failing due to contamination.  Could anyone recommend an encoder that can stand up to outdoor weather in Canada?

A hollow shaft incremental encoder.  The one we are using now is the 1.5" bore IH103 from GESgroup (globalencoder.com).  We have hundreds of these encoders, and I would like to rule out the possiblilty of buying before designing our own, or sealing the one we have.

BEI makes encoders for harsh environments but I have not used them outside.

I have used stegmann and Daynapar before.

They weren't outside, but some were washdown. There are a couple different technologies available.

The "feedback devices" site has a number of different brands under one umbrella. You should be able to find something that will work.

Heidenhain makes encoders for machine tool which are sealed...
