AWS D1.1

AWS D1.1

(OP)
AWS D1.1 in table 4.5 item 32 doesn't clearly define the groove type. for example if we qualify a pqr with V groove do we have to qualify the U groove again?

RE: AWS D1.1

Hi fazel1,

Here is my take.

The first general note for Figures 4.9 through 4.11 states " The groove configuration shown is for illustration only. The groove shaped test shall conform to the production groove shape that is being qualified". However, item 32 of the table you refer to does permit other groove types if certain requirements are adhered to.

I read item 32 and the exception does allow for other  groove welds provided they conform to the requirements of 3.12 (PJP) and 3.13(CJP) which refer to Figures 3.3 and 3.4 respectively. In other words, the exception is not considered an essential variable change requiring requalification. If the PQR indicated the weld used in the test plate was a single V groove weld, then the WPS cannot be used on double sided groove welds because that is considered an essential variable change.

If the WPS was for a CJP V groove weld, to use it for PJP groove welds, it will have to be verified by macroetch tests...refer to Sec 4.10.3.

So in summary:

1. The U groove weld will have to conform to 3.12 if its PJP or 3.13 if its CJP

2. If it's for a PJP U groove weld and the WPS was for a CJP V groove weld, macroetch tests will be required.

RE: AWS D1.1

The second sentence of the second paragraph is valid unless the joint conforms to either Sec 3.12 or 3.13 and other variables in Table 4.5 are taken into consideration. My enucleation with the exmaple of the double V and single V is provided in http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=138363&page=1
