Check out the videos on this website. Amazing stuff to see captured. I have witness one like this in person, but now I can share a similar experience.

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

Seen them... :(

But that toasting tranny beats them all, especially with a subwoofer cranked up. :)

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

I like the 500kV switch better. Hadn't seen the 345 switch yet. Wish we had the story on some of these.

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

230kV switch, that is.

Some guy left some loose tails in a panel and it was re-energised.

One Person in Charge of a job and a damn good permit to work system needs to be in place.

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

There is a major substation next to a well travelled street in my town that has a blast wall between two adjacent large transformers.  Between the transformers and the street however, where I often sit in my vehicle waiting at a nearby traffic signal, is nothing.  I often wonder why the power company values its transformers more than it does my life.

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

Because humans are probably cheaper than big transformers...

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

rmw,

I noticed a similar design feature in our plant. The generator transformers all have a blast wall on two sides. The open sides direct the blast towards the roadway where people and vehicles move. The turbines, which are more-or-less unmanned, are protected though. Nice, huh?

One day my ship will come in.
But with my luck, I'll be at the airport!

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

Tells you where the power companies priorities are doesn't it?

Folks seem to be forgetting that major outages are dangerous too. The blast wall is simply to prevent a single contingency from having even worse consequences. USA utilities build their systems to comply with the IEEE National Electrical Safety Code. This code deals with public and worker safety. It is continually being revised, so any concerns you have should be brought to the committee. Include any injury, fatality, or near miss data you have.

RE: Cool website for the likes of us.

The firewall between adjecent transformers are made to prevent the other transformer from damage when one is going to catch fire or blast. If the distance between the transformers is as per guidlines of Standard code then sometimes there is no need of firewall. The safety of the person is other issue it is achieved by protection, grounding, public survilance system, fire fighting system, alarming and annunciation system .etc
