Compatible to Titanium

Compatible to Titanium

(OP)
Guys,

I want to know if Carbon steel is compatible to weld to Titanium? And if not, any metals than can be welded to titanium and send me technical data to wdatinguinoo@cbi.com

Thanks in advance

RE: Compatible to Titanium

Carbon Steel will not weld to Titanium period. In all practicality there is nothing other than Titanium that will weld to Titanium.  Even doing this there are only certain alloys compatible with certain other alloys.

There have been a few exotic transition joints developed over the years but all are generally considered outside the realm of practicality.

If you can comeback with what you are trying to accomplish there are quite a few people here that have experience with Titanium.

RE: Compatible to Titanium

You can weld Zr to To]i, but that is about it.
with any Fe based alloy you develop intermetallic compounds.
it will not work.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

RE: Compatible to Titanium

There are methods to joint titanium to other metals.  One I know of is explosion welding,  which can be used to weld titanium to steel and other materials as well.

RE: Compatible to Titanium

Titanium is commonly clad to carbon steel in condenser tubesheet applications using explosive welding techniques.  Clad CS tubesheets are less expensive than pure Ti tubesheets.

This is necessary when the tubes are to be seal welded to the tubesheets and the tubes are also Titanium.

RE: Compatible to Titanium

That's what I made sure we did at Hope Creek Nuclear Station way back around 1978 or so.  But we called it explosion bonding back then, IIRC.

RE: Compatible to Titanium

While fusion welding carbon steel directly to titanium cannot be done, it can be indirectly achieved through the use of an interlayer material such as silver or vanadium.

Forge type welding of carbon steel to titanium like the explosion bonding methods used for cladding or diffusion bonding in vacuum or high pressure argon can be done.
