Dell Precision M70 - WUXGA - Cripes

Dell Precision M70 - WUXGA - Cripes

(OP)
I just got my new Dell M70 laptop--love it, except for one thing.  I asked for (and got) the WUXGA resolution.  It's very sharp, but the text is extremely small and kills my eyes.  I played around with some of the display settings & was able to increase font (DPI) size in that resolution, but it was still thin and difficult to read (and in some places it didn't affect size).

I find I'm most comfortable with the 1280 x 800 resolution, but it fuzzes everything up... not a big deal for text, but it is for the SW graphic window.

Is there anything I'm able to do--some sort of happy medium, or do I have to choose between "large and fuzzy" or "small and sharp"?  Thanks,

Brian

It's a "lap-top"... how far is your lap from your face?

Are we talking about ICON text - that's a WINDOWS setting... right?

On my Laptop I use 1600 x 1200 and on my Desktop (20" widescreen) I use 1680 x 1050. On both of them I use Large icons and that makes it much nicer IMO -

1) RMB start bar
2) Properties
3) Start Menu
4) Customize
5) General
6) Large Icons

See if that helps you.

You might also want to try some 'bolder' fonts for various items, available in the display settings, my guess (I have a dutch XP): desktop -> RMB -> Properties -> 'Apereance(?) tab -> advanced -> choose the items to change fonts for.

I would run it at it's highest resolution and try increasing the DPI setting and using large icons.  You said that the fonts were still a little light weight after that.  To fix this, take a look at Microsoft's ClearType for WindowsXP (it's free) available at http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx

This will help out fonts on any LCD screen, but it works best when the LCD is run at its full resolution.  It will make the text clearer and you can also adjust the font weight somewhat.

Thanks Jon, that Clear Type Power Toy works great ... that  really helps my poor old overstrained eyes.
