auger mass calculation
auger mass calculation
(OP)
hello all, I am designing an auger and I must compute the mass to obtain the resulting force. I cannot seem to find anything in my literature or on the internet about a calculation and was wondering if anyone had any insight or information? The formula would be as follows: m(total)=mass(inner shaft)+mass(auger blades) and would be a function of density of the steel we're using but as for the exact equation I am at a loss. Thank you in advance, Ryan.

RE: auger mass calculation
Could you not just do volume of the pipe, considering OD, ID, and length and then use density to get mass.
For the flights assume they are just a circle(cylinder?) of thickness, t, with the inner diameter equaling the outer diameter of the pipe and the required outer diameter of the flight. Then multiply that by the number of flights and density.
So, if you have 4 flights on a screw of 3" Dia, with the outside diameter of the screw being 8"...
you would have 4 * (pi/4)*(8^2-3^2)*t*dens + weight of pipe
hope that works as a close enough approx.
