Selection settings

(OP)
I can't select temporary axes on a part when editing another part in an assembly.  Where is the setting for this?

I've looked eveywhere under tools/options, but seem to be missing the setting.

RE: Selection settings

Tools > Options > System Options > External References & select Allow multiple contexts for parts when editing in asssembly.

How to get answers to your SW questions  FAQ559-1091

RE: Selection settings

SW Highly does not recommend this setting as it can cause numerous in-context relationships to one part. You have to pay Extremely Close attention to what you do when you turn this option on. I am honestly not sure if SW would support you if you got a part deeply in-contexted with this option turned on. Simple because there would be no way an outside person could take apart a file that in-contexted to numerous different parts.

RE: Selection settings

While I understand the inherent danger of multiple in-context relationships, I would hope that support would still be available.  IMO, if this setting is dangerous to the point that parts could get so fouled up that they wouldn't be supported then there's a problem with the setting even being there.

Not jumping down your throat, Scott, 'cause I know you're just offering an opinion, but I have a problem with options that are available to users that really shouldn't be.

RE: Selection settings

Users are what put that option in there. If you don't understand In-contexted relatioships or understand what the result would be from mulitple parts in-contexted relationships to a single part, I don't suggest you try it. Start simple and incontext one part in assembly and see what happens. Many years ago, my first project with in-contexted parts in an assembly was "Cluster &$%^".

If you have a single part and it was 4 features in it. You can incontext each feature to 4 different parts. Those parts when changed will affect that single part. That part could easily get messed up by either 1 of those 4 parts or a combination of any of those parts.

Have you ever tried to work on some elses file...? Sometimes it can be quite annoying trying to figure out what they did. Now add the combination of in-context (without the option on) Now it's just crazy trying to figure out what was done and how/why it was done. Now turn the option on and now you have complexed the matter beyond comprehension. SW may support it... but I don't think I would be able to diagnose and issue like that in a reasonable amount of time. It could take weeks to understand what a user did to a file if it had that many in-contexted relationships.

The Cluster %$@% I had above was sent to the VAR I work for now and he looked at it for weeks and could not determine what I did to get it so messed up and that was when that option was not available. I learned alot from the Cluster... and that was how and why I created the FAQ "Assemlby mates and Best Practices".
