Assistance Selecting a BLDC motor and Driver

Assistance Selecting a BLDC motor and Driver

(OP)
Hello,

I requrie some assistance determining whether a BLDC motor is suitiable for my application.

I am working on developing a device which requries a motor to turn a belt driven grinding wheel.  The motor will see varying torque depending on the load on the grinding wheel.  I am wonding if the motor can be controlled such that torque output never exceeds 12 in-lbs, thus eliminating the need for a clutch.  The motor should also be varible speed as it will be controled using a trigger switch similar to a drill.  The grinding bit should never exceed 4000 rpm.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to whether a BLDC motor and driver could work for this application?  Also, if you know of any good vendors to start looking for motors and drivers.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jason

Sorry I should have wrote Brushless DC motor

RE: Assistance Selecting a BLDC motor and Driver

A brushless DC motor will definitely do what you are asking.  The speed can be very tightly controlled and the torque can be limited by controlling the current.  And as already stated (aolade) you will need drive electronics.  There are motors that have the drive as part of the package.  Also look at AC motors with vector or inverter drive electronics, for this application they will perform as well as a BLDC.  As well as Powertec, try Baldor, A. O. Smith, Pacific Scientific, Emerson, Electrocraft, Seimens, Reliance........

If you need high torque atlow speed use permanent magnet
motor with 2 or 3 phase.

The electronic depends on the expected quantity and]
the DC voltage. Is it rectified line VTG or battery?

What kind of life time would you expect? Control
potenciometer or digital ? ( more reliable and $$$)

If you have a variable speed drive, why the belt?
