Does anyone know of formulae for calculating wall stresses, bending and deformation in a thin walled cylinder subjected to a single internal point load.

RE: Thin walled cylinder with internal point load

Depends on how exact you want to get.  "Stresses in Plates and Shells" by Ansel C. Ugural is a pretty good book that covers over-all shell theory.  You could take the theory and apply it to your problem.  "Design of Welded Structures" by Omer Blodgett can be purchased cheap from the Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation and explains how to design for concentrated loads on shells by using effective widths of shells and allowing the effective sections to absorb localized bending stresses.  I would expect Roark's to have something also.  For design Blodgetts book is the best method.  If you are in trouble then you need to be looking into the theory.  FEA would be somewhere between the two.

Thanks for that.  I will ultimately be setting un an FE model, but at the moment I am doing some quick hand calcs.  Roarks has something but it is a bit limited.

The problem I find with Blodgett is that it doesnt have an index so its not easy to find stuff.  I can find design methods for internal pressures, but nothing for a point load.  You couldn't direct me to the correct chapter could you?
