Hi to all,

An existing valve stem (Alloy steel 13 Cr.,1 Moly, HB-220-260) is to be replaced. The valve maintenance group prefer  A564 Gr.630 (H1100)to be used.

1)I went through the ASME B31.1 Code and found that it is listed under Bolts,Nuts & Studs Austenitic. The max. allowable stress values are not listed, though the specified min. tensile & yield are listed. Can I use this for an application with design temperature of 500 deg.F? and what would be the applicable allowable stress values.

2) The material A564 Gr.630 (H1100) has a high hardness and I am not sure about its machinability. Should this material be bought in the annealed condition and then hardened?

A564 Type 630 is 17/4 PH SS and is usable to 600°F.
We use it in numerous valves that operate at 575° F and have seen very few problems over the years.

The material will machine very well in the H1100 condition.  Our shop preferred to machine it in the hardened condition.  One note, the hardness will vary from bar to bar and cover a range of several hardness points.

If you purchase it in Condition A (soft) remember that the heat treatment is 4 hours at 1100°F ± 15°F. It will also shrink slightly on heat treating.
