Universal Joint Max and Min Angles

Universal Joint Max and Min Angles

Universal Joint Max and Min Angles

(OP)
I have a universal joint connecting an actuator to a valve, and I need to determine if it's installation location does not cause the joint to exceed the maximum angle for that type of joint.  Does anyone have a good reference that would give minimum and maximum angles for proper operation of a universal joint?  Is there a standard for this or does it depend on the geometry of the joint?  If it is geometry dependant, do you have a formula for calculating the maximum angle?  Thanks.

RE: Universal Joint Max and Min Angles

You probably need to discuss it with the manufacturer. What is the duty cycle?

Automotive Hookes joints should be set at 4 degrees ideally.

Constant velocity joints have an articulation diagram based on angle AND plunge. The angle maxes out at 25 degrees, typically.

RE: Universal Joint Max and Min Angles

As long as you have articulation within the joints without physical interference, I wouldn't worry about it.  Just make sure that your joints are parallel to each other to minimize angular accelerations.

Lots of information available on u-joints in automotive applications.  Try googling words like drive shaft, drive line angles, drive line u-joints, etc.
