Corrosion of Brass hydrant components in potash solutions

Corrosion of Brass hydrant components in potash solutions

Corrosion of Brass hydrant components in potash solutions

(OP)
I am trying to determine the most probable corrosion rates for brass hydrant components in a stagnant (treated, disinifected) water system.  We are looking at a potash biocide treatment, with an estimated concentration od 100 to 150 ppm.  Ideally the solution will be in contact (non-flowing) with the materials for 24-36 h.

I have limited experience with brass corrosion, and want to know (a) the most probable corrosion rates at low T (2-5 C) in (relatively) neutral conditions and (b) will there be a significant shift from what would be a normal corrosion rate (i.e. treated/disinfected water with a TRC level of roughly 0.5 - 2.0 ppm).  The piping system and hydrant components are between 15 and 20 years of age.

Thanks in advance,
John

RE: Corrosion of Brass hydrant components in potash solutions

Basicly brass is not affected by potash solutions of the concentration you mention.  Data on similarly alkaline sodium hydroxide solutions on copper alloys produce very little corrosion of the common copper alloys even at higher concentrations than those likely to be contacted by your potash solution.

good luck
