Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

(OP)
Good morning, I have a one piece outlet adaptor.  It had a sqare face with a hole thru it.  Around the hole is an o-ring groove, .03 radius and the center lines are at .531 diameter. I won't say wear this is a piece of cake to dimension, but I have been try for three or four hours and this thing won't pik-up the center points of the radius to show the .531 diameter.  Any suggestions or help will be greatly appeachiated.   Thank you in advance for nay assistance.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Can you do this in a section view?  SW sometimes has trouble picking silhouette lines for dimensions.  Section views can get around this problem.

Thank you for the response TheTick, but I have a partial section view, to display some engraving.  That silhouette line stuff is what is what is being displayed.  Maybe I will have to lie to it again and place a couple of points in there and dim the points.   Thanks.

You need to add a Split Line to the curve surface.

Thank you for the response, Chris.  I will give it a try and see if I can figure it out with what ever a split line is.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Well, that did not work, so I just turned to lying.  Put in two points and dimensioned them.  There are just to many of these I must do for any long and confusing fixes for a problem that should not exist.  Thanks anyway.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Is it possible your section line is not exactically lined up with the bore center?  If you're off a tine bit, your toroidal surfaces (like revolved fillets) will present an elliptic section instead of circular. This will befuddle the dimensions.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

Without seeing your example it's hard to know exactly what you are trying to do, but from your description I assume you are doing a Revolved Cut to create the semi-circular groove & it works fine for me in SW04 & SW05.

Thank you for the responses.  TheTick, everything in the modeland in the drawing look perfect, just like it should, a dead duplicate of the UG version, except, the the uG version can be dimension from CL to CL and SW can not.  CorBlimeyLimey, you described what I did exactly, except I am using 2006.  It looks perfect for me also, except I can not get a CL to CL dimension.  So I lied to it, but it is a good looking lie, because now it looks like what i need for the shop floor to use.  Thanks again for the help.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

What are you selecting wwhen trying to place the dimensions?
You should be selecting the arcs. The dimension should  automatically go to the centre.

RE: Dimensioning a Groove Diameter in a Face

As TheTick said the section line could be slightly off of centre. RMB on the section line & select Edit Sketch ... check the line is constrainted properly with the centre.

Thank you again for the responses.  I am selecting the arc when I try and put in the dimension.  The center line is an auto placed CL in the drawing and a fully contrained CL in the model.  I almost always used fully contrained everything, which is a lesson I learned years ago.  Thanks for trying, and I have put in enhancement requests for this and several other much needed improvements.
