Profile of surface callout on an internal feature?

Profile of surface callout on an internal feature?

Profile of surface callout on an internal feature?

I have a drawing that has a profile of a surface callout for potting material that is filling honeycomb core.  The potting material is an edge-fill that will be machined to net size.  Anyhow the callout is for the internal edge of the the potted "track in the honeycomb"  If this is in fact, not a true surface, can it be measured?

joejack7,

The call-out makes sense to me, although I agree that inspection could be a challenge.

You could measure the top edge and possibly the bottom edge.  You could require detailed photographs of the setup before they do the potting, and perhaps even inspect it at that point.  You could X-ray it.

Is there anywhere you could drill an insepection hole?

I hope you did not apply accurate tolerances.

Yes, Inspection is the problem...

The machined edge lies in between the inner edge and the outer edge of the potting, thus there is a profile callout for the inner "band" of potting.  In order to measure the surface, don't you have to have a surface to measure?  We have considered using a mylar template overlay also, but in order to do that you would have to set up to the datums, which are two holes and the surface plane and do an in process inspection before the top plies are added.

The main concern is can you measure a surface plane without physically being able to touch that plane?

joejack7,

The surface exists.  You can place a profile tolerance on it.  If you must inspect the thing, you may have to modify your design to accomodate.

Aside from X-rays, it is possible to use a transparent potting material?
