Can anyone direct me to information/literature on designing geothermal heating and cooling systems?

Try contacting the City of Klamath Falls Oregon.  That City has, I believe, a municipal geothermal heating system in the ground.

If you're looking for a smaller system, try searching for "ground loop heat pump"
