28% Chrome Impeller Repair

28% Chrome Impeller Repair

28% Chrome Impeller Repair

(OP)
Good day,

Does anyone have any experience repairing (welding) 28% Chrome impeller.  Is it even possible?

Regards,

RE: 28% Chrome Impeller Repair

What part of that very hard piece of iron are you wanting to weld on?

RE: 28% Chrome Impeller Repair

your question 1.  Yes
your question 2   No
It is highly unlikely that you will get a satisfactory repair.   Make that extremely unlikely.  High chrome iron has a very poor thermal conductivity, and while your welder will insist that he had a nice weld, approximately 10 to 20 minutes later you will have a new crack about half to one inch away from yhe weld.  Don't weld it !.  If it's practical, design a repair that's mechanical or uses epoxy.

Thank for your input.  It is the tip of one of the impeller vanes that needs to be welded.  Base on my research and your comments, we will replace the impeller instead of repairing it.

Pump Intake Design.
The distance between the pit floor and the pump bell mouth is normally 0.5D.
Is there a maximum value and so yes, why is that? Formation of floor vortexes?
Can someone tell me what is reference 2 of chapter 10 from "Pump Intake design by the Haydraulic Institute"?

Erik, you'd be better off starting a new thread rather than tacking your question onto this thread.  Someone who may have information on it may not even bother to look at this thread just because there is a new post on it if they think it's about impeller repair.

RE: 28% Chrome Impeller Repair

Before you give up on welding 28% Hi-chrome iron, contact a company called Cronatron Welding Systems.  The card I have is for the rep in Louisiana but the corporate office is at 6510 Northpark Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28216-2367. Tel. No. 704-598-1225.

The rep in our area is a welder and we've had success with welding up cracks in a pump casing.

RE: 28% Chrome Impeller Repair

The only 'weld repair' I seen even close to working was just filling a pit on a pump vane where there was no stress or structural issues - just smooth the wear surface. Otherwise - as mentioned above - it will just crack somewhere else.

Panapat - I'll check your lead. Thanks

RE: 28% Chrome Impeller Repair

I cast impellers in 28% Cr irons and salvaging is very difficult excepting applying some cold putty. Any attempt to weld leads to crack formation .Perhaps in casing one can attempt, but it certainly is not advisable to try it on impellers.
