your question 2 No
It is highly unlikely that you will get a satisfactory repair. Make that extremely unlikely. High chrome iron has a very poor thermal conductivity, and while your welder will insist that he had a nice weld, approximately 10 to 20 minutes later you will have a new crack about half to one inch away from yhe weld. Don't weld it !. If it's practical, design a repair that's mechanical or uses epoxy.

The distance between the pit floor and the pump bell mouth is normally 0.5D.
Is there a maximum value and so yes, why is that? Formation of floor vortexes?
Can someone tell me what is reference 2 of chapter 10 from "Pump Intake design by the Haydraulic Institute"?

The rep in our area is a welder and we've had success with welding up cracks in a pump casing.
