Magnetic Domains

Magnetic Domains

Magnetic Domains

(OP)
Was asked this morning about some A403/SA403 304/304L WP-W SCH 10 8" equal leg tees.
The fitters alerted their foreman that some (1 in 3) of the had very highly magnetic spots, enough to hold a torpedo level, in the body of the tee.  All the area are supposedly away from any possible manufacturing weld lines.  The chemistry as reported by the MTR is correct.

I personally have never seen a magnetic domain in a QA SS component.  They are attempting to get FN's at the present.

I personally think that there have been some weld repairs after the QA process.  Have suggested that they etch one fitting.

I also suggested that they be returned to sender as there is no friendly ferrite in the service they will encounter.

Now the question.
Has anyone seen this SA403 304/304L WP-W fittings?

RE: Magnetic Domains

Spots sound bad.  If it was over all slightly magnetic it wouldn't suprise me.  You can easily get slightly ferromagnetic condition from cold work, but if this was supposed to annealed after fabrication then I would worry.

Maybe your etch will show spots that are carburized from not being cleaned before anneal.
