Data Center Cooling

Data Center Cooling

(OP)
we have a data center were the power supplied to the computers is 175 KW.
I calculate the coolig tonnage independently using the following formula:
Tons = GPM X DelatT /24.
where GPM is measured water flow in GPM.
deltaT is (Supply - Return) CHW temp.
This formual produces ~ 40 tons when the numbers are plugged in.

My problem is that the calculated Tons are showing to be ~ 40 tons, when I am expecting 50 tons. The 50 tons is calculated as 175 KW/3.5.

The difference in the tons values I am thinking must be caused by inaccuracy in temp or flow readings.

My question is, am I right to assume that the 175 KW will need at least 50 tons of cooling?.

Thanks

RE: Data Center Cooling

when you say you measured the water temp for in and out, do you mean thats your spec, and you need the water to cool 40 tons?

is the calculation of 40 tons from actual results and you need to improve it? iam confused

to answer your question, if an electrical component is consuming 175kW, then yes it will need that much cooling.

tronical,

I found out that the return temp sensor was installed in the wrong pipe!!. So the tons calculation was completely off. I pointed this out to the project engineer to be corrected.

"energy can not be created nor destroyed"!

Thanks for the tips
