Hi.

I am about to run an analyses of a non uniform beam-column(I-shaped cross-section with web-cutouts) using ansys 9.0. As spatial behaviour is of interrest, a 3D-shell model is chosen.

Both eigenvalue buckling analysis, and non-linear(material and geometric) analysis will be carried out. The model will initially be modelled as simply supported, applying all loads, moments and BC's at the nodes at the cross-sectional centre of gravity(CG) at each end. These nodes will then be "master nodes", and it is desireable to constrain the rest of the nodes on each end as "slave nodes".

I would like the cross-sections at the ends to remain plane after deformation. I would like to allow for in-plane translation, in order to allow Poisson effects.

In the eigenvalue analysis, the CERIG command takes care of the constraining.

The problem:

In the non-linear analysis CERIG is no good(CERIG is based on small deflection theory), and I've checked out the MPC184 element to relate the "slaves" to their "masters". This should work fine for keeping the end-nodes in plane, but the problem is how to allow for in-plane translation.

Any suggestions?
