diferences between div-1 and 2

diferences between div-1 and 2

(OP)
Dear All
Just i want to know what is major differences between ASME-VIII, DIV-1 AND DIV-2?
Any body can help me out to tell me the differences please.

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

Allowable stresses in Div.2 are higher than those of Div.1. To give this reward Div.2 generally requires a more in depth analysis of stresses.
Div.2 is better suited for heavy vessels, where the increased cost of design (and of testing) may be balanced by the lower overall weight obtained for the equipment.

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

There have been many papers written about this topic.  I would suggest you take a look at http://store.asme.org and do a search under conference papers, pasrticularly the Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference.

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

I think prex answered the question well and TGS provided a good resource.

Don't forget that VIII Div. 2 is being completely rewritten. Not a revision of the existing document. They started from scratch. I believe the new Div. 2 is targeted for a release in June '06. Anyone have an update?

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

That was the last date that I heard too.  We'll probably have a better idea after the Oct 31-Nov 4 Code week.

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

Also  Div. 2 vessels are for a specific use [& stamped by P.E., etc.], whereas Div. 1 can be used anywhere within the design limits.

Thus can't easily unload div. 2's on the used equipment market afetr your plant gets closed.

RE: diferences between div-1 and 2

A mayor difference between both divisions is the failour theory.
Meanwhile div.1 uses the maximun principal stress, div.2 uses the maximun shear stress (like Ad-Merkblatt).
In the formula of div. 2 should be a term p/2, which is the radial stress averaged along the wall thikness (=-p in the inside of the vessel and =0 outside)
