VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

(OP)
Ever since we (José) updated to SolidWorks 2006 we are experiencing a very slow connection to the vault… depending on the size of your project it could take from 10 seconds to 7 minutes to display the directory listing and this happens every time you open or save a file. My only work around was to make a bunch of folders for the parts, assemblies and drawings.

This question was posed to me from a fellow SolidWorks user.
José. If any one has any suggestions it would be appreciated.

Did your work around fix the problem? IMO, it would not.
Check you server, network and SW installation.

RE: VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

Creating folders won't really help you speed-wise.  They're more for organizational purposes.  Slow PDMWorks performance is almost always due to a slow network connection.  Trying to connect through VPN is a bad idea.  Most VPN connections are encrypted, so that will really slow things down.  It may not even be possible to use PDMWorks reliably if the connection is too slow because of timeout issues.

RE: VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

I've connected to the vault via VPN too, and I believe the issues is with the VPN speed itself. Our upload speed (from the vault to the outside world) is only 700kb, where as most networks are 100mb, almost 140 times different!!!, so you should expect a 140x the time it 'normally' takes.

RE: VPN to connect to a PDMWorks Vault?

I will tell you this. I went to a Technical support Workshop this week in Boston. SW put the workshop on and we had a PDMWorks trouble shooting session and we were told that "VPN was not recommended" in the least little bit. So with that said if SW doesn't recommend it, then I'm sure that is valid reason for it.
