AutoCAD scaling

AutoCAD scaling

AutoCAD scaling

(OP)
Does anyone have this problem? When we make an AutoCAD version of a SolidWorks drawing, we Save-As and pick '.dwg' as our file format. We have 1:1 enabled and it gives us a warning about views scaled differentely. Then we open the drawing in AutoCAD. The length of a part in SolidWorks is 28.5000000. When we check the AutoCAD version, it reads 28.5000079.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Did you pick the Drawing sheet or the drawing views? That makes a difference to what is scaled.

The drawing views. As in I just go 'Save-As' while I have a drawing open.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Sean,

Why do you export to ACAD?  It seems extremely redundant unless your business processes demand you to perform this extra function.  You might want to ask this question in the ACAD forum.  It could be a precision issue

We just do! We still use AutoCAD for half of our work and when a higher level setting plan is in AutoCAD, we need to put a view of an assembly drawn in SolidWorks.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Here are a couple of threads that came up when I searched this forum using the word 'export'.  I think everyone encouters some problems when going between MCAD systems whether using 2D or 3D.  We also have legacy data in ACAD and I'm always fighting with the designers.  I don't see any value in doing work in anything but SWx or Pro/e....you can just do more with a solid model then a line....but that's my opinion.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Unless all the other dimensions are "off" by exactly the same ratio, that sounds more like a calculation accuracy/precision problem than a scaling problem.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

This may be a dumb question, but does it really need to be more accurate than 5 decimal places?  I know it depends on what line of work your in.

I know what you mean but. We can live with it being off by 5 decimal places but its the question of 'why can't it just be right?'

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Sean,

I found this on SWx website under FAQ - data translation:

When I export a drawing 1:2, the DXF/DWG is at half scale. Why?

Answer : This is as designed. All geometry is projected onto the sheet so what the users get in DXF/DWG is the same as if the picture was printed 1:1 on a printer and the edges measured with a ruler. This is necessary because of the lack of support for multi-view scaling in DXF/DWG, and the ability to set views at different scales in SolidWorks. There is no one correct scale to choose because of the ability to set different views to different scales. The user should use a scale of 1:1 for the views if they want it exported 1:1 in DXF/DWG.

Our views come out to the scale it was meant. They're are just off by that 0.000079". I dont know why it would scale them by that tiny amount.

RE: AutoCAD scaling

Sean - are you positive you are picking the correct lines in the DWG to measure to?  If you have a complicated part it is easy to end up with multiple lines very close together in DWG.

We use Solidworks-DWG conversions all the time, and model geometry always seems to convert correctly, at the correct length.
