Smoke detector in corridors?

Smoke detector in corridors?

Smoke detector in corridors?

(OP)
Are smoke detectors required in paths of egress if the building is fully sprinklered?  Where can I find the code and/or code section that talks about this?

RE: Smoke detector in corridors?

Depends on your building and if the smoke detectors are used to obtain increased travel distance to exits.

Find out what Building Code you are under and from that a determination can be made.

Also, is your building a high rise or is it classified as either a health care or institutional occupancy? This will also influence the requirements.

RE: Smoke detector in corridors?

The only fully sprinklered builing type requiring smoke detection, I am aware of, is a nursing home.  See the IBC and NFPA.  These two standards have many exceptions for fully sprinklered building types.

RE: Smoke detector in corridors?

Check your building codes (and fire codes) and the check with the Owner's Insurance company, and the local fire marshal.

In most states (in the USA) area smoke detectors are not required if the buliding is fully sprinklered. Duct smoke detectors are still required.

RE: Smoke detector in corridors?

Check the Coast Guard and ABS rules for vessels.
