export (IGES or STEP) a Solid and some wire frame that looks like text

export (IGES or STEP) a Solid and some wire frame that looks like text

(OP)
I have a solid part that I have created Wire frame Text on. It is the part numbers and extras. I am sending the data to a tool shop. I can send a Step file or IGES file. I want to export the solid or surface and ONLY export the Wire frame text that is showing on the sreen. I have a filter that layers off the wire frame which contains the construction wireframe or datums. The layer is called "03_prt_all_curves". Can anyone help?
thanks texaspete.

Pete

Hopefully this will be what you need.

1) Create a new assembly.
2) Assemble your part with the text on it in the default location *
3) Create a new part, and assemble it to the default location.
4) Right click and activate the new part.
5) Hit Insert-->Shared Data-->Copy Geom from Ext. Model
6) Select your model with the text on it, and use the default csys as a reference *
7) Under "Curves", select the curves on the model that you want to import.
8) Under "Surfaces" select the surfaces you want to import.
9) Press OK.
10) Open up the new part, and you should have just the surfaces and curves that you want.
11) Export this as needed.

* - If the default orientation will make life difficult for your machinists, you may want to create another one just so that the data you send them is oriented properly, and use this to assemble/import.

Have you tried the options on the save as menu for only exporting certain layers?

I called PTC and they taught me how to use "Customized Layers option" found in the SAVE-AS, Step, Customized Layers. One thing that must happen, The geometry (datum curves in this case) must be on a specific layer and not be share on another layer. Ex. Datum curves that are used as TEXT ex. (P/N 123) must be on a layer (we'll call it "WIREFRAME_TEXT") and the layer is associates to "Curve(s)" in the layer menu. When you export the file (in my case STEP) I selected "Solids, DATUM CURVES, and POINTs" and opened "Customised Layers" options and made sure that "Part Curves" in the menu was set to "Skip" and "WIREFRAME_TEXT" layer was set to "Ignore".
I hope this help others.
