What is this thing

What is this thing

What is this thing

(OP)
First and foremost, I am not selling this or anything.  I just want to know what this is.  I posted the below 2 paragraphs in another forum of smart people and athey had slightly differing opinions.  So I am going straight to the group of people that I hope can answer my question.  I appreciate and thank you in advance for your time and patience with me.

BTW, it says I am in the military but only because there were no options for "other".  So this was the closest to my current occupation.

The below link was the forum just for continuity sake.

I asked my father in law, who is the smartest and wisest person I know, didn't know. My mother who lived with the man who owned it doesn't know. I don't know. So I figure you guys will.

My step dad was a professional photog so it might have something to do with that. However, it looks like a surveying device of some sort. You look through the peephole and out the square glass end like a kaleidoscope. The lines on the glass appear to be elevation lines. There is a leveling bubble house on the outside of the box but it is also visible whenn you look through the peep hole. There is a "U.S." stamped on the outside of the box and my step dad was in the army back in the 50's. I figure that if it was Army gear it would say "Army" or something. It is exactly one inch square and 5 inches in length.

RE: What is this thing

It may be a range finder. The number of lines the object is off center when the instrument is level would be read in 1000 yard increments. 2 lines over center would be 2000 yards. It operates on the same principal as 'Stadia' lines on survey equipment. Of course they also are out dated. Bring it to an older Land surveyor for confirmation.

RE: What is this thing

Its a hand level and I have one! It was issued to me when I worked for the USGS.  I used it to measure outcrops in the field.  It can be used with any number of surveying rods or even yard sticks.

RE: What is this thing

I agree with ctmtwilliams.  I keep my field technicians supplied with these. Very Simple. Very Handy.

RE: What is this thing

I agree with the last two, a hand level.  The extra lines are for range finding.

RE: What is this thing

There - you have it ! Consensus is that it is, indeed a hand level.  I've had them and have had them "borrowed" forever.  Not a problem - that's how I had gotten mine!

What I want to know is now you got the picture in the message?

RE: What is this thing

First the picture has to be hosted on a website (I use imageshack.us).  Once the picture is hosted then copy the URL.

For instance, I took the below picture.  Then I uploaded to a website of mine.  The URL of the picture is
 http://www.paintball4all.com/Portals/0/NtForums_Attach/zPICT3355.jpg

I placed the URL inside of [img "URL"]
So [IMG  h**p://www.paintball4all.com/Portals/0/NtForums_Attach/zPICT3355.jpg]  Obviously you need to replace the stars (**) with "http".
