Von Mises Stress

Von Mises Stress

Von Mises Stress

(OP)
Hi All,

I am quite new in the FEA. I would like to know what is the Von Mises stress and how is it used to predict failure?
What kind of failure is this, and what failure theory is being used?
What are the advantages/disadvantages and limitations of this theory?

Best regards,

ONEPOINT

RE: Von Mises Stress

If u goto efunda.com and search "von mises", u can find detailed answer to ur questions.

RE: Von Mises Stress

Von Mises failure theory is widely accepted  for ductile material such as steel it works off of yield not ultimate tensile strength.

RE: Von Mises Stress

It is also a combined stress theory taking into account the principle stresses and shear.  Don't recall the formula off the top of my head, but efunda should give it to you as should the course notes from MIT's open course information.

RE: Von Mises Stress

Sorry GBor, but "principle" stress does not exist !

RE: Von Mises Stress

Shearing stresses on the planes on which principal stresses SIGMAmax and SIGMAmin occur are always zero, regardless of the values of SIGMAx, SIGMAy and TIxy.

johnhors,

I KNEW someone would get me on that.  One of those "DON'T SEND THIS" as I pressed the button kinda' things!  Perhaps you would prefer "principal" stress?
