Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

(OP)
This has only happened twice to two separate engineers over the last week and a half that we have had 06 up and running.  I have not been able to recreate it even though I have been able to create my fair share of crash to desktops.

When saving their file two of my engineers experienced crashes and when they went to open the file they had been working on, it no longer existed in the working folder.  That is the first problem.

Soon after those crashes there were assemblies opened that had file references to the Latest folder in the vault, potentially causing vaulted files to be overwritten.  Is there a way to block personel access to the vault path without blocking PDM access.

I have yet to get a question answered here, but I'm gonna keep asking till I do.  P.S. Our VAR could not help.

In Tools/Options/System Options/Backups you should have a folder that is used for backing up all SW files for each save. I have it set for save a copy on each save.
DO a search on the pc to see if it was saved somewhere else. I have seen this once.
I do not know how the vault was overwritten without a user telling it so. Have the PDMAdmin check settings.

Thanks for the quick reply ctopher.  One of the engineers had backups set to 0, so no luck for him, searches were not successful either.  About the vault being overwritten, somehow Solidworks is opening assemblies (in this one case) and instead of pulling parts in the local working folder it is pulling from the vaults latest folder.  I don't get it either, there is no search path set for that, and no Admin setting that I can see to deal with it either.

Go to:
File/Open/assy, select references box in open window, is there a link to any folder linked to the vault? There shouldn't be.

Right, but the problem is, after the crashes those references changed from the local copy (which did exist), to the vault folder.  We delt with this when it happened by Save As -> References, but I am still concerned by the obvious fact of referencing the vault.  I am concerned that someone might not realize they are modifiying the master file.  That is the problem.

Maybe try re-install or repair. I don't know what else may be causing it. Could be a bug. Your VAR should know.

Thanks for your input Chris.  It is most definately a bug, the VAR said the vault would not let you save over files inside it, but that is incorrect also.  Only one of our VAR guys is worth a damn, and thats just cause I like to talk video games with him :)

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

Clem,
A couple of things to check.
Open VaultAdmin, under Vault Settings tab uncheck “Allow latest revision overwrite” and “Allow users to rename documents in the Vault”.

Also using explore, check to see what your Vault Folder Properties on the server are set too. \\..\VaultData\(projects) should be set to Read-only. Your name of (projects) folder maybe different than ours.

Bradley,

A questions for you, if the VaultData folder is Read Only, wouldn't that dissallow the Client to write (check-in) to the VaultData folders?

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

Clem,
No, because it forces everyone to go through the PDM program to check in files. Windows property settings will prevents anyone from changing the files outside of PDM.

Thanks for the Star.

I did a little experimenting, and I guess I don't see how this will work.  If I choose to make the project file read only I can still save over parts inside that folder.  If I make all folders, subfolders, and parts read only than I can't take ownership of them to begin with.

Clem
Do you have too or are you taking ownership of the file before checking in?

Bradley

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

(OP)
Yes that would be one reason I would take ownership of a part.

To clarify in my post above I meant to say " If I choose to make only the Vaultdata/project folder read only"

Thanks

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

Clem,
If you look in the PDM of a part that you believe you over wrote, do you see any history of that part?

Also if you open PDM Admin Vault tool and look in the tab “Revision Scheme, Working copy”, do you have anything in that dialog box?

Bradley

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

I covered my butt and replaced the affected files, but what would have shown up had I saved over a part in the vault would have been the exact same information as the last time it was checked in properly.

We do have a working copy symbol enabled.

RE: Crashing causes loss of file and PDM prob. Anyone seen this?

Clem,
I do not think this is what is happening, but I have to ask anyway. Is their a plus behind the file name in the PDM of the files you are over writing?
I am leaving for the day, time to go home. 3:30 P.M.

What you get to leave at 3:30!  Woe is me.

No these are not working copies.

Thanks for trying,

It'll probably get fixed in '07

I am at my wits end. Maybe see if you could get your VAR to make a road trip out to your location.
Good Luck and if I think of anything I will post it.
