ALLOWABLE COMPRESSIVE STRESS

ALLOWABLE COMPRESSIVE STRESS

I want to find allowable compressive stress (ASEME section VIII Div 1 vessel) for SA 387 material (1.25% chrome plate) at 1250°F. Stress tables (although those are for tensile stress) in Part D stop at 1200°F. Any WRC bulletins give any methodology to find what I am looking for?

RE: ALLOWABLE COMPRESSIVE STRESS

You're probably out of luck.  You're definitely in the creep regime.  And since you're interested in compressive stresses we're obviously talking buckling failure.  Let me tell you - creep buckling is an extremely difficult phenomenon that barely a few experts have been able to get a handle on.  I woudl stay away from that failure mode at all costs.

(You'll note that the allowable compressive stresses in Sec. II, Part D even stay away from the creep regime - with a healthy margin!)

Any research papers on this issue? I am sure there are a few thesis written about this topic. Any references will be highly appreciated. I am also sure that WRC has done some work on this topic. Any bulletins that you know of that tackle this issue?
