Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

(OP)
Hello everybody

I have been assigned with the project to convert an auxilliary boiler that burns Diesel oil, to one that burns Bunker C.

I would like to know where can I find information regarding with this subject(calculations, materials, installation tips, etc.), in order to perform the task as good as it can be.

Thanks.

Ricardo

RE: Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

What type of boiler?

Does the existing boiler have soot blowers?  Bunker fuel will require them, and if you had some for diesel, you might need more and in different areas.

Oil gun tips are different, and while bunker type fuels are burned with mechanical atomization, my opinion is that steam atomization is a better choice.

You will need steam (or some type) of heat for your tanks to heat the oil so that its viscosity is lowered for pumping to the burners.

Pumps are different, and if your diesel fuel did not have reicirc, your bunker system will require it.

Those are a few thoughts that jump out at me.

RE: Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

Hello everybody:

It was few days ago that we got advice that these years international organizations and governments are issuing legislation in order to protect our environment.

One example is the MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI, "Regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships".

The more important thing suggested, was the switch-over between the traditional heavy fuel oil fuel to the lighter grades of fuel such as marine Diesel oil and marine gas oil.

In our case, the boiler burns Diesel and the authorities of our facility have decided not to achieve any change in this equipment. Diesel is the fuel to burn up.

Thanks

RE: Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

Not only will the burner have to be changed but you will also need an oil pre-heater and reduce the firing rate to compensate for the increase of bunker C oil heating value.

RE: Converting a boiler from Diesel to Bunker C

You might want to take a look at the heat input change.  The increased heat content will have an affect on the safety valves releiving capacity. The valves may now be undersized.

Cold end corrosion should be considered.

I suggest you contact the boiler and or burner manufacturer to get there input. Provide a fuel specification to them. They may be able to supply a complete package of pumps, heaters, etc. to convert your system to burn the heaver oil.
