When Is A Chamfer Not?

When Is A Chamfer Not?

When Is A Chamfer Not?

(OP)
At what point do you stop calling a feature a Chamfer on drawings?  When it is larger than 1/2", 1", more?  Any thoughts or a standard for this?

RE: When Is A Chamfer Not?

I am not aware of any standard that says a chamfer stops being a chamfer over a given size. We certainly call them up as chamfers whatever the size, however we may be wrong.

Interesting to see what others think.

RE: When Is A Chamfer Not?

Per current standards, on drawings "chamfer" is not called out anymore anyway. The correct callout would be ".10 x 45 deg" (deg symbol).

Thanks ctopher, I knew that.  Just one of those days where I couldn't see the forest for the trees.

For future reference, any angle other than 45° requires separate dims for length and angle.

RE: When Is A Chamfer Not?

You can say "break edge .xxx-.xxx" or "break edge .xxx max", or something like that. It doesn't mean a chamfer, can be any shape.

RE: When Is A Chamfer Not?

If you say "Break edge .xxx max"  you are
saying that zero is OK.  If you allow no
break on the edge, that is what you will get....

I disagree. By calling an edge break it has to be broken, and you are saying it can be no larger than a certain size. Not breaking it at all violates the instruction to break the edge.
